Unclaimed A Turner Series Book 2 edition by Courtney Milan Literature Fiction eBooks
Sir Mark Turner is famous because of the book he wrote promoting male chastity. Jessica Farleigh is a courtesan who is hired to seduce Mark; she'll get enough money to be able to retire and his reputation will be ruined.I read the first book in the series and enjoyed it a lot. Mark was one of the secondary characters and he's a likable guy, not at all the prig that the blurb makes him sound like. I did have my doubts about this story but decided to give it a try as I like Ms. Milan's writing. Her plots are usually more complicated than they might appear from the blurb, and I'm quite happy to say that was also the case here.
As Mark makes clear repeatedly, he may be chaste but he's not a saint. He's actually quite frustrated by others' views of his character. He is a nice man though not a patsy. He has his own morality and it works for him.
I was afraid Jessica was going to be the 'fallen woman who is redeemed' trope which I'm not crazy about. In this case, there's a lot more to her; she's intelligent for one thing besides being beautiful. She finds her own way past her previous life, and I was truly surprised by how she goes about it.
This book was written before #MeToo but, while a historical, Mark's views are in line with that movement. I don't mean the story is too modern, not at all, but it was refreshing to see respect for women treated as a normal way to act as well as to apportion responsibility equally. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

Unclaimed A Turner Series Book 2 edition by Courtney Milan Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Now, who would have thought endless discussion regarding virginity in a romance novel could be so interesting?!
I had already purchased books one and three in this trilogy, but purposely skipped Unclaimed, book number two. It sounded as if it would be dull and preachy. But after reading Smite's story, I knew I had to go back to read Mark's.
Thank goodness I did! Yes, in areas it was far less than exciting-- but it was quietly thoughtful. Jessica and Mark really spoke to each other, and their individual insights balanced each other. Mark was NOT a stick-in-the-mud. He was adorable and funny and sweet. Jessica was strong and a survivor.
Unclaimed is simply a wonderful book.
If you want a book report, read someone else's review. I started reading romance because sometimes I have trouble turning my brain off and a lot of romance books are good for mindless, don't-have-to-think reading. Not this book - and I still loved it. I was curious to see where all the talk about chastity was going in the book. It would have been very easy to make him into a caricature who preached at people and in the end, fell from grace and proved the untruth of his preachings. That's not how it went. Ms. Milan provides witty banter, clever reasoning, and allows him to be utterly and loveably human. In this and in the previous book (which I had to go back and purchase - Unveiled (Hqn) - if you haven't read it, well worth it!) the heroes are learning how to be good men and hoping to be loving husbands after being raised by an unfit mother (and that's being kind). The heroines, used to being treated as women often were in those times, as pretty and brainless adornments, have their ideas of 'the norm' challenged, turned on its ear, and find themselves allowed to be smart, strong women by the men who love them - and are proud of them for who they are. Isn't that what we all want? To be seen as we really are and find someone who loves us in spite of our failings, is beside us in our struggles and is proud of our efforts even when we don't succeed? This is good, good stuff and you'll be glad you bought it.
Not as good as the first book in the series, but still interesting enough to keep my attention.
When we left Ash's story, Mark was working on his voluminous treatise on the riveting subject of "chastity." When we meet him again in "Unclaimed," the book is finished and Mark has become a much revered celebrity for penning the book, so much so that he has been knighted by the queen herself.
As with all celebrities, there are lovers and haters, and Lord Weston wants to destroy Mark (for no better reason than he's just plain jealous). He offers a reward of a lot of money to any woman who can seduce Mark.
Jessica takes Weston up on his offer. She's a burnt out courtesan (and Weston's former mistress), who needs the blunt to get out of the courtesan business. She sets out to seduce Mark but is completely thrown off guard by his genuine concern and regard for her. Before she even realizes it, she's fallen head over heels in love with him, but with Weston breathing down her neck, she must decide who to betray herself or Sir Mark?
I liked this story well enough..it was predictable and I felt that Jessica spent too much time agonizing over what to do. Dragged a bit while the two were "courting". Entertaining though, and sweet. I give it 3 stars.
This can be a stand alone.
Oh how I am getting so tired of the "I'm not good enough for him even though I love him, and he loves me." especially when he's wealthy, influential and can miraculously erase all bad publicity because he is the brother of a Duke.
Excuse me? Then what's the problem?
I really didn't care about either of the MC's. They were bland, boring. I was growing so tired of the hero constantly declaring how he is a virgin.
Maybe I was just not in a good mood when I read this, but I really didn't find this read enjoyable.
I also am not a fan of heroines who are trying to ruin the hero. It makes me truly dislike the heroine, and unless she does some incredibly good things to redeem herself, which this one does not in my honest opinion, I can't like her.
Here she was meh. She sort of redeemed herself but not enough to my personal liking.
I also felt the first time they made love (his first time) was nothing but sex. Nothing beautiful, romanctic. I was expecting there to be more of a connection... instead it was just sex.
I have been told the 3rd book in this series is very good. I have my fingers crossed.
