The humor in the sample is what drove me to buy the book and keep reading. I saw some complaints in the reviews about editing; ignore them, the editing is fine. The characters are weird, fun and sometimes dangerous. The main is in denial about his talents, which is a bit humorous, and the mystery is so interesting, you just keep reading along. There’s a large cast of characters and I found myself having to think about who was who a few times, but the characters are well-drawn and interesting. The world Rain Oxford creates is fun and has enough unique aspects to keep you guessing. I enjoyed the book end to end. Highly recommended for fantasy or urban fantasy readers. There is one section near the end that goes on too long when it comes to graphic violence (happened in the past, but still) that you may want to skim if you are a cozy reader. It’s still worth the read and I just finished the second in the series and it was a great read too! If you like Frank Tuttle or some of Holly Lisle's work, you'll like this series.Product details

I could not put Dark Waters down from the time I started reading it. Fast paced action that kept you guessing. Rain you are one fantastic writer.
I liked it. Being a human with self interest, I want more of this series. So much for the demands of the weak minded . I will be watching for more adventures . Thanks for the read.
Wonderful series. Hooked almost immediately and didn't put it down until I had read the whole series (currently 4 books). Interesting enjoyable characters. Very few grammatical errors. Well worth the read. Strongly recommended for anyone that likes magic in today's world.
Wow, can't believe how many 4 and 5 stars this book got. No way did it deserve more than 3! There was just not enough depth to characters and story for it to come away as being "great" instead of just "good" that it was.
Devon Sanders is our star in this story, who makes a living as being a PI. He's aware of the supernatural world around him but stays out of it for his own personal reasons. Then he gets tossed head first into a supernatural case and goes undercover in a paranormal school for Fae, shifters, and wizards. The school is there so the paranormals can learn more about themselves and others, but most so they can learn to coexist and survive with humans in the regular world. Ok, so even though Devon Sanders is posing as a student in this school and is trying to solve a murder case, you would think that we'd get a lot of story about the various classes in this Super School, but all we walk away with is learning how to make a sleep potion. Are you kidding me!? As the cover implies, magic is based on the Elements, however we get precious little examples of any of them in action. A fire wizard seems to be only able to make a little fire ball that he can throw, which to me is the absolute lamest thing you could use as a fire mage. Water mage? Other then a very minor example from one of the professors we get diddly. Air? I can't remember any example.
Earth? Hmm, nope, I got nothing.
The Fae we learn very little about as well, which is too bad since they did seem to be fairly interesting despite the little we got from them.
Shifters. Apparently they are not to be confused with Weres, even though Shifters are affected by the full moon, silver, being a or being with an Alpha... Hmm sounds a little similar right? Absolutely stupid! Also, there seems to be a shifter for every different animal in the world. Seriously, there was like no end to the different kinds running around this school.
This book had potential to be a fantastic read, but fell far short in my opinion. I made it to 78% in book 2 before tossing it. It was just more of the same as book 1.
I like this series, have read both books. But for both books in this series I sometimes get confused as to what is happening at certain moments. I'm certain that in the mind of the author everything is clear, but for me it's not.
Sometimes people jump in cars and drive for 6 hours and I'm staring the pages of the book going 'Why are they going there again ? Who lives that far away again ?'. How can one vampire be 6 hours drive away yet come over during the night ? Did I read that wrong ?
I have problems with the timeline, more explanation sometimes what are the impact of what is happening would be nice.
A nice start to this series. A 30 year old Private Investigator who has been marginalized for much of his life because of his "differences", attends a paranormal university -- first as an undercover assignment, and next as a student.
The book, for the most part, held together well during the initial "world building". The story is told from Devon's (the PI's) point-of-view. There is some question of the genre that this series is attempting to fit into -- Devon's a bit old for "young adult" (as are many of the other students), and action scenes are a bit too bloody. The book and series follow the common "unaware student in magic school" theme, but with enough variation to make things interesting.
The story of Dark Waters is creative, imaginative, and very unique. Everything is expressed by a vivid and smooth writing style from start to finish and I don't recall coming across any substantial grammatical or formatting errors (which is something I can't say for most books).
There's a definite suspense vibe that blends in perfectly with the overall pace of the story which did a great job of keeping me engaged and hooked from the very beginning. I started reading Dark Waters by pure chance without any kind of preconceptions or bias, and admittedly I may have even been skeptical at first, so I found myself pleasantly surprised within the first few chapters when I realized that I had stumbled upon a structured and clearly talented author.
Overall, I'd give Dark Waters a strong 8.5 out of 10, I look forward to seeing how the series plays out.
